The â€Å"Book of Night Women† by Marlon James is an incredibly authentic-feeling novel that brings into play many deep issues for being a piece of fiction. I found this book to be a real page-turner that helped, among other things, to widen my understanding of the institution of slavery in the West Indies as well as the dynamics of the relationships between the slave and master. It is this often confusing relationship that I wish to further explore in this paper.In the story our main character, Lilith, ends up developing feelings for her master, an Irishman named Robert Quinn. The character Quinn is a white slave owner that eems to understand that the institution of slavery is an evil one, but does not know what to do about it, so he goes on with life the way it is. It is hard to hate him, but it's hard to like him as well. Being an Irishman, he is lower on the social hierarchy put in place by the slave owning community, and because of this he searches for pity and tries to r elate to Lilith, his slave.He compares their lives and social standings, which to me seems almost ridiculous, but to him is a completely legitimate understanding. He does treat Lilith with a certain respect that no other slave owners in the story ives to her. One example that stands out in my mind is the matter of their sexual relationship being more tender and loving than the usual â€Å"animalistic† approach that many of the other masters take out on the slave women. â€Å"No, fucking.No, rutting like animals, like the animal all white man think black woman be. But he say something when he coming and he hold on to her so weak, like she be the master and is all he can do to hold on. † However, Robert Quinn and Lilith are still clearly not equal to one another in the way that Quinn so desperatly tries to convey to her. I feel that the time period placed on this story plays a significant role in Robert Quinn's treatment of Lilith as a woman.At first glance, even if he i s a bit more kind to her, such as insisting that Lilith sit and eat with him while she stands in the corner just watching (something she is accostomed to), and telling her that he wishes to teach her how to ride a horse; he is still incredibly demanding of her. He still tells her that he â€Å"expects a hearty meal† when he returns home late, and that she should clean his home, etc. But keeping this in context, this is how the average woman ould have been treated at the time.Robert Quinn is treating her much more like they are in the average relationship based gender roles of the time, and much less like the usual master and slave relationship. This was a somewhat confusing aspect of the text, that unless put into the perspective time, could be completely missed. It is apparent though, that Robert Quinn wants Lilith to feel this connection between the two of them. He wants her to feel as if she is a free woman when she is with him, so much so that he almost forces this upon h er. As if demanding her to be free woman when in his company, which is redicoulous and hypacritical.In conclussion, Marlon James does a great Job at unfolding this relationship to his readers in a way that touches many aspects of the gender and class roles of the time. It is my opinion that no matter how much Lilith wanted to hate her master, Robert Quinn, she could not simply because of his often soft treatment of her; even if he was them. No matter how misguided the opinions of Robert Quinn may seem, he truely beleived what he infered about his low social standings and the resulting connections he made with Lilith.

INTRODUCTION My project is all about the Philosophy of Man, God and the world according to Pre – Socratic Philosophers who rejected traditional and mythological explanations that they have a lot of rational explanations that some of them I believed in, Great Pillars of Western thought or Classic Greek Philosophy that focusing on the role of reason and inquiry in explaining man and soul that some of them I contradict to their beliefs, Medieval Philosophers which their philosophy refers to philosophy in Western Europe but this philosophy of era is one of the greatest achievements in philosophical theology, Modern Philosophy that centers on the relation between experience and the reality, the ultimate origin of knowledge, the nature of the mind and it’s relation to the body, the implications of the new natural sciences for free will and God and find out some of this philosophers are more believes in science and this Modern Philosophy will discuss my belief in God, Man and the world on existentialism, utilitarianism and communism, lastly the Eastern Philosophers who’s belief generally does not focus on a single, indivisible, all – powerful God, I also write my philosophy of God which the eastern philosophers was almost absent from some of their beliefs to God like in Buddhism and Confucianism and the Hinduism that they said God is Brahman from them but they have almost 3 Gods. My belief in the world, man and God shall be presented in different views which I have more discuses and written on the next page.

What impressions do we get from Captain Wentworth, Austen’s hero, from chapters 7 to 9?

In chapters seven to nine of Persuasion, Austen introduces us to Captain Wentworth as he has jus arrived in Kellynch. This is the first time that Anne and Wentworth have seen each other in eight years. We learn more about Wentworth and the way he thinks and acts. In these three chapters we also see the effect of Wentworth's arrival on Anne, Henrietta, Louisa and their relations. Through the reactions of the characters we learn more about some aspects of his personality and his behaviour, especially towards Anne. In chapter seven we get the impression from Mr Musgrove than Wentworth is someone who has made a good impression on him and can be respected as after meeting him, Mr Musgrove â€Å"came back warm in his praise†. We also get other impressions of â€Å"Captain Wentworth† from Louisa and Henrietta after he visits their house. They are both charmed by Wentworth and they are â€Å"perfectly delighted† with him, especially after they see â€Å"how much handsomer, how infinitely more agreeable† he is â€Å"than any individual among their male acquaintance†. Austen makes us like Captain Wentworth without us having even met him through the opinions of other people. Not only do the Miss Musgrove's praise Wentworth, their father has a high opinion of him as well. We also see that Mary and Charles are desperate to meet him, to the extent that they will put from their minds one of their son's injuries to have dinner with Wentworth instead. Through their, in particular Mary's actions we see that Wentworth has been deemed important enough to warrant some excitement. We also see the reactions of Mary and Charles after their dinner with Wentworth that they also have praise for him especially on his â€Å"charming manners†. However Anne's reaction to Wentworth and his avoidance of breakfast at the cottage the day after is one of understanding, this is due to the fact that only she knows that he does not want to see her and is avoiding her. However he does come to the cottage, for a brief time where he and Anne meet again for the first time in eight years. Their interaction is only short as he is only visiting for a few minutes before hunting with Charles, yet they are reduced to greeting each other formally â€Å"a bow, a curtsey passed† and they never exchange any words. We see that Anne is relieved to have their first meeting over and done with. However after observing that Wentworth has not changed much and in fact looks much better, she finds out from Mary that Wentworth thought that Anne was â€Å"so altered he should not have know† her again. At the end of the chapter we switch to Wentworth's point of view and his thoughts. We gain an insight into his past relationship with Anne and we find out how he used to feel about her and how â€Å"he had never seen a woman since whom he thought her equal†. This suggest that Wentworth is still not over Anne and was still not used to being in her presence as he had had â€Å"no desire of meeting her again†. We see that Wentworth tries to deny that he has any feeling for Anne and he fools himself into thinking that he wants to marry someone else, anyone except for Anne. We know that he hasn't been totally unaffected by Anne's decision eight years previously as he states that he wants a woman who has â€Å"A strong mind, with sweetness of manner†, two thing which he thinks that Anne lacks due to her being persuade not to marry him. In chapter eight we see much more of Wentworth as he is now part of the â€Å"same circle† as Anne Elliot and her in-laws. From Anne we learn more about how her past relationship with Wentworth is much different from her present one. We see that whilst they were â€Å"Once so much to each other! † they are â€Å"Now nothing†. During this chapter we also find out more about Wentworth's life at sea and the reaction of Louisa and Anne to this. Louisa reacts much like Anne remembers she acted when she was getting to know Wentworth and didn't know much yet about the navy. We find that Wentworth served with the Miss Musgrove's other brother, Richard who died sometime previously. Wentworth is kind to the Musgrove's, in particular Mrs Musgrove about the death of â€Å"Dick† even when it is implied that he did not even like her son and â€Å"had probably been at some pains to get rid of him†. At the end of the chapter we find that Wentworth is enjoying himself and according to Anne, who cannot help notice, this is due to â€Å"the attention of all the young women† this includes Henrietta, Louisa and the Miss Hayters. However Wentworth also seems to be worried or at least curious as to why Anne doesn't seem to be enjoying herself and has not even danced as all she has been doing is providing the entertainment. We also see more interaction between Wentworth and Anne yet it is still only polite and does not even hint that there was anything between them in the past, as if they are only recent acquaintances. In the last chapter we see that Wentworth has had no trouble fitting in at Kellynch and even though he had had plans to move on and visit his brother in the country â€Å"the attractions of Uppercross induced him to put this off†. However with an old face turning up in Uppercross again we find that his reaction to Wentworth is much different to everyone else's opinion of him. The Musgrove's all had â€Å"unvarying, warm admiration† for him, whereas with the arrival of Charles Hayter we see Wentworth from a different perspective. One of the factors which could have explained Charles's opinion of him could be that before the arrival of Wentworth Charles had been attached to Henrietta yet after his arrival Henrietta had forgotten all about him and it was as their relationship had never occurred. We also see more proof that Wentworth cannot see Anne hurt as he saves her from her nephew Walter who had enthusiastically climbed onto her back and had not let go despite being told several times to do so. In this instance we also see more about Charles Hayter's opinion of Wentworth after his good deed is that Walter should have listened to him when he told him to do something. However his opinion of Wentworth has not changed yet he feels slightly inadequate as Wentworth helped where he could not and he feels as if he is being replaced by Wentworth. In conclusion I would say that we find out a lot about Wentworth, especially through opinions of other people. We also find out about more of his past in these three chapters than in the six chapters before. Wentworth is a typical hero from a ‘romantic' novel and he seems as if he is too good to be true as he has no huge flaws in his character. We get the impression that overall Wentworth seems to be past the hurt Anne's rejection caused him yet underneath there are hints that this is just a faiade. This adds depth to his character and make him a much more likeable person.

For example, when Beowulf goes to fight Grendel, he says, â€Å"now I mean to be a match for Grendel, / settle the outcome in single combat† (425-426). In this quote, Beowulf is saying that he wants to keep the matchup fair between Grendel and himself, so to keep the playing field level he will fight him without any weapons. This is a great example of Beowulf being over confident in himself by saying he doesn’t need weapons to kill Grendel. When he is young, his pride helps him win battles, but at an old age, hubris can be a flaw. This is seen when Beowulf faces the dragon after he has been king for 50 years. At this old age, Beowulf is still so prideful that he wants to fight the dragon alone. This is an example of how his hubris is a detriment. Because of his hubris, Beowulf does not regard age and thinks he will be victorious just as in previous battles. He finds out this is not so when he is defeated. Near the end of the story, Beowulf hears of a dragon that has been terrorizing his people. To destroy this figure, which the people fear, he goes to fight the dragon with his warriors. When he arrives to the area where the dragon lives, he turns around to his men and says, â€Å"this fight is not yours, / nor is it up to any man except me/ to measure his strength against the monster or to prove his worth† (2533-2535). In this quote, Beowulf tells his warriors he wants to fight the dragon alone. He commands them to stay back so that he may kill the dragon by himself. The main reason why he does this is because he feels responsible for his people and he believes he is the only one that should defend them. His men obey his words, and he goes into battle by himself. Evil poses a big problem to Christianity, because they propose the existence of a deity who is omnibenevolent (all loving), while simultaneously also being omnipotent (all powerful), and omniscient (all knowing)[2]. If God is omnipotent, then God has the power to eliminate all evil. If God is omniscient, then God knows when evil exists. And finally, if God is omnibenevolent, then God has the desire to eliminate all evil. If God is all powerful, then he must have the power to stop such events. If he has the power to stop them, but chooses not to, then he isnt omnibenevolent. If he doesnt stop such events even though he wants to, then he is not omnipotent. Evil only happens where good goes wrong and it is always man who causes this to happen.[12] If evil is a lack of goodness or perfection (privatio boni) rather than a substance in itself, how do we know what perfection is? In order, for example, to distinguish between what is good in man and what is bad we would need to understand what perfect human nature is. There is a logical contradiction in maintaining that a perfectly created world has gone wrong, because this would mean that evil must have created itself out of nothing, which is not possible. In other words, whether evil is considered to be a substance or a lack of goodness responsibility for it must lie with God. If, in the Garden of Eden, before the Fall (i.e. in the perfect world) there was no knowledge of good and evil, how could there have been the freedom to obey or disobey God?
